Professor Roger Beaty Lab

The Sonophilia Foundation has announced a collaboration with world-wide recognized expert in psychology and neuroscience of creative thinking Professor Roger Beaty and the Cognitive Neuroscience of Creativity Lab at Penn State University. Their work together will focus on enabling field applications and disseminating the scientific research of creativity to a broader public.

Professor Beaty’s Lab at Penn State University uses scientific instruments such as neuroimaging to understand how people create new ideas and solve complex problems. It also develops new tools to measure creativity and explore how creative thinking works in different contexts and domains, from music to science to everyday life.

“Talking about creativity as a thing seems so abstract – but there’s actually been a lot of progress in the scientific study of creativity, how it can be measured and how we can quantify the creative quality of ideas,” said Professor Beaty.

Together with Professor Beaty’s lab, the Sonophilia Foundation aims to achieve the following overarching goals over the next 12 to 24 months:

  • Hosting of online / analogue meetings and workshops to spark conversations between a diverse group of stakeholders in politics, business, education, science, and the arts.
  • Sonophilia Foundation will grant scholarships for field research in Germany and Austria, where scholars can investigate the known creativity methodologies to assess and increase effectiveness.
  • Collaborative publications to inform a wider audience about the creativity research and positive effects of creativity in daily life.

Seda Röder, the founder and the director of the Sonophilia Foundation describes this collaboration as follows: “Creativity is relevant in every field of life as it is the driver of all innovation. Therefore it should be studied and consciously integrated into every aspect of learning and doing. Together with Professor Beaty, we are looking forward to contributing to a better understanding of creativity. Our work together will help more people to unleash their creative potential to build a prosperous future.”
